Digital Benin team in Milan

2024-07-03

A couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure of hosting the Digital Benin team in Milan, after months of working together remotely. Digital Benin focuses on objects looted by British forces from the Kingdom of Benin (now Edo State, Nigeria) in February 1897 and distributed in the immediate aftermath. The project brings together objects, historical photographs, and rich documentation from collections worldwide, offering a long-requested overview of the looted royal artefacts of the Benin Kingdom. During the workshop we worked with the researchers to conceive new digital and analog tools for historical research, and planned the next steps of this project. But most importantly, we spent time together, talked face to face, and shared the same table. Thanks to all the researchers who joined and to the organizations supporting the project: Prof. Dr. Kokunre Agbontaen-Eghafona, Dr. Felicity Bodenstein, Dr. Jonathan Fine, Dr. Anne Luther, Prof. Dr. Barbara Plankensteiner, Osaisonor Godfrey Ekhator-Obogie, Eiloghosa Obobaifo, Imogen Coulson, Ermeline de la Croix, Mabel Osaruemwinnomwan Oviahon, and Dimitri Müller.
