From Data to Wisdom (FDTW) is a research project studying how medieval and early modern scholars visualized knowledge, from diagrams and trees to circular schemes, between the 13th and 17th century. Funded by Portugal's Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, it brought together historians, philosophers and designers to build a corpus of nearly three hundred images and study what these visualizations reveal about organizing knowledge before modern data visualization existed.
Calibro was invited to design and develop the digital tool that makes this corpus explorable. Built on IIIF, the standard for sharing high-resolution images, it lets scholars move between close inspection of a single image and a wide view across the whole collection, supporting both the annotation work that builds the dataset and the exploration that interprets it.
